The GDS to Postman exam is a departmental exam conducted by the India Post / Department of Posts for promotion of Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) to the Postman post. The syllabus tests postal knowledge, operations, arithmetic, general awareness, and post-specific duties.

🅰️ Paper I – Basic Postal Knowledge & General Awareness (100 Marks)


Part-A: Basic Postal Knowledge

Payment of postage, stamps, and stationery

Rules for packing, sealing & posting

Methods of address

Post boxes and post bags

Duties of Letter Box Peon

India Post products and services (mails, banking, remittances, insurance, stamps, business)

Part-B: General Awareness / Knowledge

Includes basic general knowledge topics:

🅱️ Paper II – Knowledge of Postal Operations (Postman Only – 50 Marks)


This section tests practical knowledge relevant to a Postman’s duties and postal operations:

Delivery of mails

Refusal of article

Payment of e-Money Order

Redirection of mail

Instruction regarding address change

Articles addressed to deceased persons

Liability of detention of certain mails

Facilities provided by postmen in rural areas

Postal Manual VI – Part III topics (Head Postman duties, postal business knowledge, postman’s book, sale of stamps, delivery instructions, etc.)

Postal Manual Volume VII operations (stamps & seals, mail abstract, exchange of mails, transit procedures, duties of mail guard/agent, etc.)  



🅲 Paper III – Knowledge of Local Language (50 Marks)


(Test applicable for Postman & Mail Guard candidates):

Translation of words from English to local language (MCQs)

Translation from local language to English (MCQs)

Letter writing (40–50 words)

Paragraph or short essay (40–50 words)  



🅳 Paper IV – Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) (25 Marks)


(Applicable for Postman & Mail Guard only — held separately):

Basic computer data entry skills (e.g., typing or key depressions within a time limit)
